Port Royal, Jamaica, 1689.
Francis, a freshly minted Navy cadet, returns home to confront the truth of the system he has unwittingly embraced: the people are impoverished, and the system he once believed in is responsible. Inside the Navy, his mentor is resolute in keeping Francis from getting involved in his piracy, even if the cause is noble and despite Francis’s begging. This leaves Francis torn between unquestioning loyalty to his mentor and a growing desire for the justice he believes the pirates represent.

When word of his trade spreads, not only does Mouse bring him stolen money in exchange for decorating a gun he found on the streets, but also noblemen who have dark secrets. Brook refuses Mouse's money and decides to make a man out of the kid before he turns into what everyone cast him to be before Mouse could choose himself: a criminal.
