BARKS & CODEX ENTRIES

The examples provided include a variety of game genres, situations and characters. They have all been contextualised to tailor relatively specific narratives:

  • Action-adventure RPG
PC brings the party to the camp. Here, the mentor NPC is always available to train combat as you acquire new skills and attacks. The skill tree is also in his menu, where you can also equip, buy and unlock weapons.
Inspiration includes The Witcher Series & Baldur’s Gate III.

  • Existential narrative roguelike-lite
The player fights their way to the end of the run by slashing ghost-like creatures, then faces the Grimm Reaper as the main boss.
Inspiration includes mostly Hades & Hades II.

  • Walking simulator & puzzle game
A satirical, 4th-wall-breaking game where the PC moves through the world, solving puzzles and finding items that unlock areas. The main mechanic is combining items to create others or connect ideas, but progress keeps annoying the narrator.
Inspiration includes The Stanley Parable and Edna & Harvey.

None of these barks come from an existing game; any similarities are pure coincidence and most likely they feel in tone with their references.

BARKS

CODEX

The examples provided include a variety of game genres, situations and characters. They have all been contextualised to tailor relatively specific narratives:

  • Clair Obscure, Expedition 33: Expedition Journal
These three entries are meant to be heavily rhetorical and introspective: memories from previous expeditions dealing with the regret of becoming an Expeditioner, the nightmares they start experiencing from the traumatic events they live through, and an early expedition approach to understanding the Fracture.

  • BioShock: Audio Diaries
These entries are meant as heavily politically influenced texts: audios based on Rapture, including Andrew Ryan rules, scientists’ experiments, and a family living through society falling apart.

  • Bestiary entries
Playing with the tonal shifts between these three concepts, I’ve chosen five animals to describe in their characteristic style: cat, fruit fly, chimpanzees, baby crocodilians, and ravens found in parks trying to come across as just another duck.

    • Hollow Knight: Hunter’s Journal

    • Delicious in Dungeon: Cookbook

    • A Witch’s Encyclopedia of Newfound Magic Creatures & Spells
