Port Royal, Jamaica, 1689.
Francis, a freshly minted Navy cadet, returns home to confront the truth of the system he has unwittingly embraced: the people are impoverished, and the system he once believed in is responsible. Inside the Navy, his mentor is resolute in keeping Francis from getting involved in his piracy, even if the cause is noble and despite Francis’s begging. This leaves Francis torn between unquestioning loyalty to his mentor and a growing desire for the justice he believes the pirates represent.

Bertha, a hard-working mother, refuses to face her daughter’s death, selling her belongings in the hope of moving on more quickly from her grief. In the process, she must confront not only friends and relatives but also the secrets Isabella never shared. Mouse, a 12-year-old orphan who’s got a reputation for mischief and stealing in the town’s streets, is determined to get his gun crafted and decorated by the new gunsmith in town, Brook.
Brook, however, comes from working for the royalty and is tired of how they view the lower class. When Mouse brings him stolen money in exchange for the craft, Brook refuses to accept it and decides to make a man out of him and earn his share honestly, much to Mouse's complaints.
